Spiritual Care

Worship in the MRI Chapel | Contacting a chaplain

Back to Living with Cancer

Spiritual care concerns the whole person. In each person there seems to be a spiritual dimension linking body, mind and spirit. In times of illness many people search for meaning, purpose and direction in our life. When we come in to hospital our world can shrink - we feel isolated, frightened and vulnerable.

Addressing our spiritual needs can help, not only with the control of physical symptoms and anxiety but also with choices in our individual situations. It may also help us to deal with feelings of sadness, disappointment, anger, resistance and helplessness.

Spiritual care can bring the comfort of belief in a power greater than ourselves. In the Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths this power is called God.

Spiritual care may give us hope that our lives have purpose even when physical abilities are diminished. It may improve our self-esteem and confidence and promote healing in our relationships with others and God. With this a renewed and realistic hope may emerge so that we can accept our life here and now.

Serious illness provides an opportunity for spiritual exploration and growth. Working with our concerns and hopes, we may sometimes need a chaplain to share our journey, helping us to understand our fears and what the future may hold, and assisting us to manage our relationships with the people around us as we wish.

We all have personal beliefs about death and dying. A representative from your faith community will be able to offer you some of the support you need in a way that has meaning and value to you. Christian, Jewish and Muslim chaplains are employed by the Trust, and the Chaplaincy can provide you with information about contacting representatives of other faiths or beliefs.

The chaplains are available to provide pastoral and spiritual care and support for patients, their relatives and members of staff. You may contact us via the hospital switchboard, or you can ask a nurse to contact the Chaplaincy, and one of us will be happy to visit you.
