The Children And Parents Service (CAPS)

Introduction

CAPS is a citywide, multi-agency early intervention service which delivers highly effective evidence based interventions to preschool children and their families. The jointly commissioned service is a partnership between the NHS, Manchester City Council and voluntary sector Family Action, Banardo's & Big Life. The service has been delivered across Manchester for over 15 years and includes the delivery of Incredible Years® Parent Programmes to preschool children and their families and Video Interaction Guidance as part of the Preschool Psychology Clinics in Sure Start Children's Centres.

Incredible Years Parent Programmes: Incredible Years Parent Programmes are highly evidence based in the treatment and prevention of behavior problems in young children. All CAPS staff are accredited parent group leaders to ensure model fidelity and positive outcomes for children.

Incredible Years Preschool: 14 week parent programme for parents of children aged 2-4 years of age to prevent and treat behavior problems.

Incredible Years 'You and Your Incredible Baby': 10 week parent programme for parents of 0-1 year olds to promote positive relationships and attachment between parents and their babies.

Video Interaction Guidance: Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) is an evidence based intervention used to develop positive relationships and attachment between parents and their children. All CAPS staff are accredited VIG guiders to ensure model fidelity and positive outcomes for children.

Preschool Psychology Clinics: for the assessment of 0-4 year olds to identify appropriate interventions including Incredible Years Parent Programmes and Video Interaction Guidance.

 

Admission Information

Pre School Psychology Clinic:

By referral from health professional (e.g. Health Visitor, GP, Midwife).

Incredible Years Parent Programmes (Preschool and Baby Programme): There is a 12 week window prior to the course starting during which referrals are accepted by telephone. Applications for the course will then be completed at a jointly arranged outreach visit with the family, the referrer and CAPS course leader. A list of courses is sent to potential referrers.
