Patients will be advised of the risks of surgery in full before signing consent. The surgery will be discussed in detail during the patient's visits and parents and patients will be able to ask questions about the process. It is considered vital that the patient themselves understands the surgery and feels comfortable with what will take place.

In general, cochlear implant surgery takes between two and four hours. Patients are in hospital for two days or less depending on the time of their surgery and generally they require very little pain medication. The incision is behind the ear and requires a small amount of hair to be shaved. (This will grow back after surgery and the patient may wear their hair however they like after surgery!) Surgery will take place at Manchester Royal Infirmary. Dissolvable sutures are used and the incision is allowed to heal for two to three weeks before the external portion of the device is fit.
