Dr Patel studied medicine in India. Her ambition was to pursue a career in an environment where all people are considered equal and health care is free at the point of delivery, which brought her to the UK in 1986. With exceptional paediatric experience (at the John Radcliffe Oxford, Guys and Hammersmith Hospitals London), she sought an academic position and joined the University of Manchester as a Clinical Lecturer in Child Health (Honorary Senior Registrar) in 1992. Dr. Patel also undertook clinical research which led to an MD in 1998 and simultaneously contributed to designing and implementing the 1994 Problem-Based Learning (PBL) undergraduate programme at Manchester Medical School (MMS). At a time when few doctors pursued formal courses in education, she pursued and obtained a Masters in Health Professionals Education (Maastricht 1994-1996, ‘cum laude’). She was appointed to her current post as Senior Lecturer in Child Health and Honorary Consultant in 1995. Dr. Patel has actively and creatively contributed to an extensive spectrum of education activities at MMS. She is also Co-Director of the Masters in Medical Education which is recognised by the Higher Education Academy (a national accrediting body).
