Service Description

The Department of Paediatric Neurology is one of the longest established in Britain. It is supported by 8 consultants based at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (RMCH) and 1 consultant based at the Royal Preston Hospital who joins the on-call rota at RMCH.

The paediatric neurology department is a centre of excellence and tertiary referral centre. Outreach clinics are held in many of the 20 district general hospitals that we serve. Inpatients are admitted to RMCH.

The department has close links with child psychiatry, psychology, neurosurgery, metabolic medicine, clinical genetics and paediatric intensive care.

Specialist clinics held cover a wide range of subspecialties:

  1. Epilepsy - including epilepsy surgery and ketogenic diet specialist services
  2. Neuromuscular
  3. Acquired brain injury
  4. Neurovascular
  5. Tuberous sclerosis
  6. Neurofibromatosis
  7. Neuroimmunology
  8. Tic disorders

The department is one of the 4 centres in England chosen to provide a service for children's epilepsy surgery. This is run jointly with Alder Hey Children's Hospital (jointly called NorCESS) with all the under 6's being operated on in Manchester.
