The Orthopaedic Unit consists of consultant
surgeons and their teams. Not all patients will require surgery,
and the Unit aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of problems
of the musculoskeletal system and then arrange the appropriate
management. We work closely with colleagues in the departments of
rheumatology and neurology and some patients with musculoskeletal
problems will be more appropriately dealt with in these units.
The Unit works with a team of physiotherapists
and orthotists as well as occupational therapists and specialist
nurses who all help to ensure that each child receives the right
treatment in the right environment at the right time.
The Unit is a recognised Centre of Excellence
and acts as a tertiary referral centre for unusual or difficult
elective paediatric orthopaedic conditions.
Areas of expertise include:
- Dedicated clinic for the management of club
feet using the Ponseti method.
- Use of the Ilizarov method for limb
- Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH)
- Osteogenesis imperfecta
- Neuromuscular orthopaedics including Botox
treatment and hip reconstruction surgery.
