Pre-admissions

The Pre Admissions Team based at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital is a team of nurses and anaesthetists who carry out assessments in preparation for surgery and procedures which will be done under general anaesthetic.

The Pre Admissions Service was established in the year 2000 by two nurses and has continued to grow into a very effective and essential part of our patients admissions into hospital. In 2014 a group of Anaesthetists joined the team and further developed the service to enable children with more complicated medical backgrounds to be seen by them in advance of their surgery. They also provide support and medical guidance for the Nursing staff.

The purpose of a pre admission appointment is to

  • Assess your child's fitness for anaesthetic, including a full medical history and an examination
  • Carry out or arrange any tests or investigations which may be needed to try to prevent any avoidable delays or cancellations for surgery
  • To discuss your child's surgery or procedure and answer any questions you may have.
  • To plan your child's admission

The Pre Admission Nurses see approximately 5000 patients per year in their clinics and the Pre admission Anaesthetists see approximately 500 children per year in their clinics.

Admission:

The Pre admissions clinics are carried out in the outpatients department of the children's hospital. Your child must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian as we need to confirm and record accurately your child's medical history. Please bring with you any medication, inhalers or creams your child is currently taking.

Booked in patients

Some children receive a letter to attend clinic through the post. When you arrive for your appointment you will need to book in using the machines in the main atrium and then proceed into the outpatients department. We also hold some clinics over at Trafford hospital at the children's satellite unit. Please ensure you read your letter carefully to ensure you attend the correct hospital.

One Stop service

When your child is seen by a Doctor or Surgeon in the outpatients clinic and listed for surgery or a procedure under general anaesthetic you will be asked to fill out a health questionnaire and attend the 'one stop' clinic and we will complete the pre admission assessment on the same day. This will save you an additional trip into hospital and will allow us plenty of time to ensure everything Is in place for your child's admission.

What to expect

During the appointment your child will be assessed by the Pre-admission Nurse Practitioner. Detailed questions will be asked about your child's general health. A physical examination will be carried out; this will include listening to your child's heart and breathing. Any necessary tests or investigations will be arranged, wherever possible these will be carried out at the same appointment.

Possible investigations

ECG

Swabs

Blood tests

Urine samples

Pregnancy test

Anaesthetic Clinic

There are usually two anaesthetic clinics each week where children will be assessed by one of the Consultant Anaesthetists. The children who attend these clinics usually have a more complicated medical background or family history. They are usually referred to this clinic by the pre admissions nurses or directly by the surgeon. These clinics are by appointment only.

Therapeutic and Specialised Play Department

If your child has learning difficulties, autism, or is anxious about their admission we can make a referral to our hospital Therapeutic and Specialised Play Department who will contact you before the admission and carry out an assessment of your child's individual needs

If you feel that your child will need support during their preadmission appointment or if you have any queries please contact the Theraputic and Specialised Play Centre on the following number in advance  0161 701 0698.
