Introduction

The department provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic imaging for paediatric patients aged 0-18 years, carrying out approximately 45,000 examinations per year across a range of modalities. The service is provided by a skilled team of dedicated paediatric radiologists, paediatric radiographers, sonographers, play specialists, admin and other support staff who are adept at dealing with a full range of patient presentations and have won an award for their work improving the patient pathway for those with autism.

The department has recently been refurbished with a planets and outer space theme. As a result it has received national recognition for how it improves the patient experience of children and families visiting the department.

Areas within the service

  • General Radiography
  • Fluoroscopy
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • CT Scan
  • MR scan
  • Ultrasounds

Admission Information

Routine referrals for imaging should be made directly to the department via CWS. Urgent requests need to be discussed with a Paediatric Consultant Radiologist.

Information regarding non-medical referrers can be found in the Information for Radiology Staff Section.

Relatives and Escorts

The number of people allowed to remain with a patient during an examination varies dependent on the modality and the type of examination being undertaken. Siblings or other accompanying children are not permitted into the x-ray, CT or MR scan rooms. Parents/carers of patients attending as outpatients, particularly for longer examinations, need to ensure that they have someone with them to mind any accompanying children.

Patients attending the department outside of core hours need to be accompanied by a member of nursing staff.

Pregnant carers

Due to the increased risk to the foetus from ionising radiation a carer who is pregnant:

  • may be able to go into an x-ray room but would not be able to help the child during the examination
  • would not be able to stay in the CT scanner room during the examination
  • is not advised to stay in the scan room with a patient having an MR scan during the first trimester of pregnancy

Any Tests/ Preparations Needed

Checking for pregnancy

It is a legal requirement that for certain examinations, which may involve irradiating the lower thorax and abdominal area in patients who have commenced menstruating (generally accepted as between 12-55yrs), the start date of the last menstrual period needs to be ascertained prior to carrying out the examination. This is usually discussed between referrer and the radiology department if it is expected to be a problem.

Specific preparation is required prior to some examinations, please look at the specific modality pages for further information.
