Services for children with Autism
Welcome to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, we recognise
Autism.
Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects the
way a person communicates and relates to people around them.
Children and adults with Autism have difficulties with everyday
social interaction.
It is estimated that around 700,000 children and adults may have
autism - or 1 in 88 people.
Improving Quality Services for Autism
The recognising Autism Management Programme (RAMP) have an
improving quality services for autism multi disciplinary team. They
have devised an agreed Royal Manchester Children's Hospital Autism
standard to ensure that access to RMCH is better for all
children/young people and their families with Autism.
This includes pathways for everyone to follow when
children/young people attend RMCH in the following areas:
•
Paediatric out-patient clinic.
•
Admission to RMCH.
•
Attending paediatric emergency care.
Work is currently underway to develop a pathway for transition
to adult services.
Plan of Care
To enable all healthcare professionals to plan your child's
admission or visit to RMCH, please contact Play Services via the
referral form and forward this to playservices@cmft.nhs.uk.
A member of the team will contact you to undertake a person centred
assessment which allows reasonable adjustments to be made through
consideration of communication methods, special interests and
behaviours. The use of social stories, visual
timetables and hospital visits to the relevant ward or department
can be utilised prior to attending RMCH. We may also
communicate with other organisations such as your child's
school.
If you have any individual information, for example, an 'All
about me' communication passport, please bring this along with you
to all appointments and admissions to share with staff.
If you are a healthcare professional referring a child
with Autism to RMCH, please see the 'referring a child'
download.
Reasonable Adjustment Checklist
Autism Champions
RMCH have developed champions on each a ward/department to help
support the child/young person, their family and staff members to
improve awareness.
