Spinal Surgery

Service Description:

The Spinal Deformities Unit manages children and adolescents with spinal deformity, spinal trauma and other spinal conditions. More than 100 surgical procedures are undertaken annually.

The department has a particular expertise in the care and management of children and young people with neuromuscular conditions. A joint satellite clinic with the neurology team at Leeds General Infirmary is held quarterly.

The Specialist Nurses hold nurse-led clinics for pre-operative assessment and ward discharge. They are also responsible for the conservative management of infantile idiopathic scoliosis, including the serial plaster-casting programme

A multidisciplinary approach to care is provided by clinicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and orthotists.

Additional Support:

The Spinal Nurses provide ongoing support from the time of referral through to discharge. They also put families with similar conditions/circumstances in contact with each other as a means of support.

The Scoliosis Association UK (SAUK) provides information and support for children with spinal deformities and their parents/carers.
