Healthy Schools

Manchester Healthy Schools Team works with 170 schools in the city to become healthier learning communities by developing health and wellbeing outcomes for all children.

Supporting schools to improve the health outcomes of children, the team focuses on five key Public Health priorities:

  • Tackling health inequalities
  • Improving sexual health
  • Reducing substance misuse and encouraging sensible drinking
  • Tacking obesity
  • Improving mental health and well-being

There are five Public Health Practitioners who each take a citywide lead in a thematic area to support the key priorities. These are:

  • Sex & Relationship Education
  • Drug and Alcohol Education
  • Healthy Lifestyles
  • Emotional Health & Well-being
  • Mental Health

This is achieved by:

  • Raising awareness of the health and social/economic needs of the school aged population with school staff and professionals who work with schools
  • Increasing skills, knowledge and understanding about health-based issues with the whole school community, eg. staff, parents/carers, governors
  • Supporting schools to identify the health needs of their children and develop an action plan.
