Certificate in Oral Health Education (NEBDN)

Summary

This course is aimed at dental nurses who are required to provide Oral Health Education to patients under the direction of a dentist.

The course will run over one year. Please see attached timetable for dates and times.

The study days will include all the theoretical instruction and practical experience needed to fulfil the NEBDN syllabus.

Entry

To be eligible for the course you must:

  • Have the support of your employer in completion of the record of experience and be able to commit to 100% attendance on the given course dates
  • Be registered with the GDC

The Award

In order to achieve the award you will have to successfully complete: -

  • A Record of Competence
  • A written paper (1 hour 30 minutes - multiple choice and extended matching questions)

Record of Competence

This is designed to provide a record of activities completed to facilitate specific learning experience.

To enable you to complete your portfolio you must: -

  • Be able to obtain practical experience undertaking oral health education, covering a range of topics with at least 5 of the following 7 patient groups:
  • pregnant / nursing mothers
  • parents of pre-school children
  • parents of school children
  • adolescents
  • adults
  • elderly
  • special needs
  • Have the support of your employer to validate the portfolio of experience

The Record of Competence consists of

Part A
Log sheets

The care of 7 individuals; 4 to be seen on at least two occasions and 3 to be seen once, is required and the candidate must target at least 5 of the specified 7 patient groups (detailed above).  The setting should normally be within the candidates own workplace but may be carried out elsewhere if appropriate to the particular patient group

Part B
Expanded Case Studies

Candidates must complete 1 case study from the log sheets:

The case study must be approximately 2250-2750 words and must cover different topics from any patient group.

Part C
Display / Exhibition

Candidates must plan, produce and evaluate a display / exhibition using a set proformas.  This should ideally, but necessarily be in their place of work.
