Maximum Blood Order Schedule

This internationally adopted schedule enables better stock management and reduces unnecessary transfusions.

The Maximum Blood Order Schedule is reviewed on an annual basis. It lists elective surgical procedures that require cross-match and outlines how many units are required.
If the procedure does not appear on the list, a group and save is normally all that is required. If it is found that a specific patient requires more than the schedule the reason needs to be clearly documented on the request card. Good documentation reduces telephone calls by the transfusion laboratory staff to check why a specific request is being made that does not necessarily correspond with the schedule.
Good documentation and communication will negate an enquiry from the transfusion laboratory.
