An emergency is a sudden injury or illness. It is often obvious if somebody needs immediate emergency care. If you are not sure if a situation is an emergency, you can call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 for advice.
Sometimes the quickest way to help is to take the person to the nearest Emergency Department. Often it is possible to get there under your own steam. However, even if your hospital is fairly close, you should dial 999 and ask for the Ambulance Service.
