We were authorised as a Foundation Trust (FT) by Monitor (FT independent regulator) on January 1 2009. We are known as Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust but you will know us better as:
We now have:
Our Community
The Trust is located at the heart of one of Manchester's busiest areas, providing healthcare to the local population around Oxford Road and radiating out to the communities of Ardwick, Longsight, Levenshulme and beyond. In addition to delivering high quality healthcare, we also have responsibilities as a corporate citizen within our community. Many of our 10,000 staff live locally and we are keen to play our part in employment, regeneration and other initiatives to make the area a better place to live, work and visit.
Local projects and partnerships we are involved in include:
The Corridor Manchester
Established in 2007, as a partnership between the Trust, Manchester City Council, the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University, the Corridor has contributed to the re-generation of the area which runs along the Oxford Road spine from the southern entrance to the city up to St Peter's Square.
There are number of high level projects including the cross-city transport initiative improvements to public realm, employment initiatives, the low carbon strategy, digitisation and importantly for the Trust, the devolvement of the former Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, with a major project to provide the location of innovation and training facilities.
The above innovations support both the strategy direction of the Trust and their partner institutions.
The investment will also transform the area's transport links, facilities, public spaces and cultural life. For more information go to http://www.corridormanchester.com/
Employment initiatives
The Trust has strengthened its commitment to employing people living local to the hospital site by embarking on various local employment initiatives. Most notably, the Trust is working in partnership with The Manchester College and JobCentre Plus in delivering tailor-made pre-employment training programmes aimed at local residents. This initiative has led to the Trust formalising a Local Employment Partnership (LEP) agreement, which was formally signed on behalf of Jobcentre Plus by Tony McNulty, Minister for Employment & Welfare Reform, during a visit in January 2009.
The Trust's community project plan brings together a number of external partners, including Manchester City Council, Manchester Joint Health Unit, the City South Partnership and other providers, all sharing the objective of improving employment opportunities for those people living locally to the main Trust 'island' site.
In recognition of the project, in March 2009 the Trust was very
proud to receive a Central Government award for Recruitment
Innovation for the pre-employment training programme designed to
recruit Trainee Clinical Support Workers. The judges thought that
the Trust demonstrated a high degree of innovation in its
recruitment practices when utilising the Local Employment
Partnership, demonstrating real evidence of true benefit to the
local community.

Manchester Health Academy
The Trust was the first NHS organisation to sponsor a Health Academy school. The new Manchester Health Academy opened in September 2009 on the site of the predecessor high school in Wythenshawe. The new health academy opened in September 2010 and includes a brand new academy school costing £19 million together with the new £1 million com library and the refurbishment of previous relatively new buildings.
The Health Academy provides 600 places for 11-16 year olds with an additional 120 post 16 places. It is sponsored by the Trust with co-sponsorship from Manchester City Council and The Manchester College.
An inclusive educational environment, the Health Academy supports all types of learners whatever their interest, while also being a centre of excellence for everything relating to health, biosciences and sport and will focus on careers in the NHS. The Academy will also develop networks to help support and influence the health agenda at other schools across the city.
