Public Members area

In keeping with our current Constitution, patients, carers and the public are brought together in a single Public Member Constituency which is subdivided into the following areas:

Members can become more involved in the work of our Trust with one way being through our Council of Governors with Public Members voting for Public Governors during the election process (usually commences Summer/Autumn each year).

Our Council of Governors is responsible for representing the interests of members and influencing the Trust's future plans.  The Council of Governors is also responsible for recruiting and engaging with members and making sure that our membership profile reflects the communities that we serve.

Having a broad and representative membership community and a Council of Governors elected from and by our members is key to working together to better meet the needs of our communities.

As a member, you can decide exactly how much or little you would like to be involved. For example, you may simply wish to vote for Governors that represent your area and receive regular communication from us, such as newsletters and updates.

About the Manchester Single Hospital Service

Plans are being progressed to create a new, city-wide hospital Trust which will provide much better, safer, more consistent hospital care that's fit for the future for people living in the City of Manchester, Trafford, and beyond.  As part of these plans Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) and the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust (UHSM) will join together to create a new Foundation Trust (in October 2017) called Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT).  Then, the plan is for North Manchester General Hospital (which is currently part of The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust) to join the new organisation around 12-18 months later.

In order for the merger to take place, we need to have the approval of both Boards of Directors (the people responsible for all aspects of operation and performance including setting corporate strategy) and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) as well as a satisfactory risk rating from NHS Improvement (NHS I).

On 1 August 2017 the CMA announced in its final independent report that it has cleared the merger between CMFT and UHSM as it will be of overall benefit to patients. You can read more about this announcement here.

As well as the above approvals, and as part of the assurance process, the Council of Governors (elected representatives for members and the public) of both UHSM and CMFT will then be asked to vote upon whether the appropriate process has been followed by the Boards in relation to the merger.

Work on these processes is continuing and we remain on track to establish the new organisation on 1st October 2017, subject to that clearance.

As a member of CMFT, we greatly appreciate your support and want to offer you the opportunity to remain involved as a member of the proposed new NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). If the proposed merger is approved, your membership of CMFT will transfer automatically to MFT on 1st October 2017, unless you choose to opt-out by contacting the Foundation Trust Membership Office.

If the proposed merger does not go ahead, you will remain a member of CMFT and we will retain your details on our database. If the merger is approved, during Autumn 2017, we will hold elections among staff and public members for the new Governors of MFT. Governors have a very important role as they are the link between members, patients, carers, the public and stakeholders and the Board of Directors.

If you, your family, friends or colleagues are interested in becoming a member, please contact the Foundation Trust Membership Office for an application form, or join via our on-line Membership Application Form.  As outlined above, your membership will be automatically transferred to the new organisation (MFT) on 1st October 2017, unless you choose to opt-out by contacting the Foundation Trust Membership Office (details above).

Become More Involved

All our members are equal, but the Trust recognises that some members may wish to become more involved in the life of our NHS Foundation Trust. One of the biggest ways that you can get involved is to put yourself forward to stand for elction to our Council of Governors.

If you are interested in standing for election as a Public Governor, please contact our FT Membership Office. They will be able to give you details of when the next Governor elections will be held and the process for standing as a candidate.  Alternatively, visit our 'Governor Election' webpage.  The Trust is keen to represent all areas of the community on the Council of Governors, and welcomes interest from anyone within the various constituencies.

You do need to be a member of the Foundation Trust before you can stand for election (details of how to join are outlined below) and Governors have to meet certain criteria.

You do not need specific qualifications for the role, other than an interest in healthcare and a commitment to representing your constituents to the best of your ability. Please see our Governor Role Information Pack for more details. A comprehensive induction programme and ongoing training is provided to Governors once they have been elected.

Foundation Focus Newflash - Membership Newsletters

The Trust produces a regular Membership Newsletter to keep you informed about all the news and latest developments within the Trust. We also produce a young people's version of the newsletter.

Changes to Your Membership Details or Cancelling Your Membership

As part of the membership application process, the Department of Health asks NHS Foundation Trusts to capture information in relation to ethnicity, language and disability status so that we can be sure that we are representing all sections of our communities.  We therefore ask membership applicants to disclose this information during the application process with all information collected being confidential, in keeping with Data Protection Rules, and is not released to third parties.  If the information that you supplied as part of your initial membership application process has changed or changes in the future, please contact the Foundation Trust Membership Office.
