Young People's Event

Young People's Event 2017

More students with humphreyOur eighth annual interactive Open Day was held on Tuesday 27
th June 2017 and was attended by over 500 students, teachers and NHS staff.  As well as stands covering NHS careers ranging from Nursing and Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Cancer Care, Medical Photography, Medical Engineering, IT and many more, there were also brand new stands this year.  These included Children & Young People's Nursing Education, Radiology, Cardiac Physiology, Vascular and Urgent Care Medicine.

Popular interactive sessions this year included learning how to do CPR (basic resuscitation), accident prevention, beating the bugs that can cause serious infections, using microscopes to identify cells, checking blood pressure and finding out more about diseases of the circulation, including veins and arteries.

Delegates received information and advice about looking after their mental and emotional health, dental and eye care and healthy eating, as well as finding out about how to become a volunteer in our hospitals or join our Youth Forum.

The students also joined in discussion groups with our Chairman, Kathy Cowell, about shaping health services for the future and talked to our Governors about what priorities were important to them and their families in delivering high quality healthcare.

Feedback from visitors to the event included:

  • "I would just like to thank you for inviting us to the event, our students and staff really enjoyed it and found it very useful!" (The Co-operative Academy of Manchester)
  • "I was so glad we had the opportunity to attend this event as it has given my nephew a good insight into the range of careers and jobs within the NHS.  The stands and activities available were excellent and provided a significant amount of information. Each year (around June) the Membership Team hosts a Young People's Open Day.  Over the years, around 3,000 young people with their teachers, friends and parents have attended and not only gained an insight into our organisation, but also discovered more about career opportunities in the NHS, volunteering and work experience in our hospitals in addition to receiving health and well-being advice from our health experts. If you would like to find out more, please contact the Foundation Trust Membership Office.
