The Directorate of Laboratory Medicine (DLM) deals with the
diagnosis of disease, evaluation of effectiveness of treatment and
research into causes and cures of disease.
CMFT is home to one of the largest Laboratories in the United Kingdom, receiving over two million samples per year and performing over 5.5 million tests.
The DLM is registered with the Clinical Pathology Accreditation (UK) Ltd (CPA). The departments in the Directorate have been assessed by CPA at regular intervals and are accredited accordingly. Further information about CPA accreditation can be obtained from the CPA website.
In order to maintain the high quality service the Directorate
will regularly assess service delivery by feedback from user
meetings, telephone audits and user satisfaction surveys.
Clinical Audit seeks to assess whether we are doing what we should
be doing as laid out in the policies and guidelines of the Trust or
external bodies. The Directorate of Laboratory Medicine has
an active Clinical Audit group who meet regularly to share audits
between disciplines.
Clinical Governance as 'a framework through which NHS organisations are accountable for continuously improving the quality of their services and safeguarding high standards of care by creating an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish'.
The Directorate of Laboratory Medicine has a bi-monthly Clinical Governance meeting which assesses and evaluates the effectiveness of the service we provide, therefore learning from successes as well as recognising areas where improvements are required. Clinical Governance reinforces the Trust's and the DLM's commitment to the provision of patient focused high quality clinical care.
