The Clinical Virology department, as part of the Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership (MMMP), is one of the largest Clinical Virology departments in the UK.

The laboratory receives over 400,000 samples per year, performing over a million tests annually and is divided into two sections - serology and molecular diagnostics. We provide local, regional, supra-regional and national reference services for a wide range of viral and microbial infections, utilising state of the art equipment and techniques, housed in a modern facility as part of the Directorate of Laboratory Medicine, staffed by a dedicated professional and highly trained workforce.
Holding full Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA UK Reference No. 0635) against assessment specifically for the provision of Virology services, Clinical Virology provides a continually developing service for the investigation, diagnosis, prevention and control of viral and microbial diseases. Excellent quality standards are maintained through participation in External Quality Assurance schemes such as NEQAS and QCMD and IQA. Support for clinicians and service users is readily available through an experienced clinical Virology consultant team 24hrs a day, 7 days a weeks, providing valuable information related to service use, interpretation of test results and clinical advice on antiviral therapy, immunoprophylaxis and immunisations.
We are accredited for training in Virology by the IBMS for Biomedical Scientist specialist training and by the RCPath for medical training. We also support Manchester Metropolitan University in the delivery of training for the Co-terminus degree in Biomedical Science and have a long standing relationship with Manchester University for research and development and post-graduate training and supervision.
