Question 1: How do I collect and send an exfoliative cytology sample?
Exfoliative cytology samples must be collected into clean
containers and sent to the laboratory as soon as possible.

Each specimen must be accompanied by a completed and matching
sample request form.
All specimen containers must be clearly labelled with:
- The patient's full name
- Their date of birth
- Their NHS or hospital number
- Specimen type (non-gynaecological)
Question 2: Can I get help with a fine needle aspiration?
The staff in the laboratory can advise and assist on any aspect
of sample collection.
The team at Manchester Cytology Centre is available
Monday to Friday between 8:30am and 5:00pm, on 0161 276 5111, 0161
276 5115 or 0161 276 5116.
They can also be contacted by bleep on 07659 545 074. Please
note calls must be received by 4:15pm for FNA attendance.
The Christie FNA clinics are available Monday to Friday, 9:00am
to 12:30pm on 0161 446 3643.
