Non-gynaecological cytology FAQs

These are some of the most frequently asked questions about using our non-gynaecological cytology service.

If your question is not answered here, try the non-gynaecological cytology user guide (PDF, 1.51MB) or contact us.

Exfoliative cytology samples must be collected into clean containers and sent to the laboratory as soon as possible.

See pages six to ten of our non-gynaecological cytology user manual (PDF, 1.51MB) for detailed information on all exfoliative cytology sample collection.

Each specimen must be accompanied by a completed and matching sample request form.

All specimen containers must be clearly labelled with:

  • The patient's full name
  • Their date of birth
  • Their NHS or hospital number
  • Specimen type (non-gynaecological)

The staff in the laboratory can advise and assist on any aspect of sample collection.
