Predictive of future insulin requirement in patients presenting with NIDDM (Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) and in relatives of IDDM (Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) patients.

Clinical information

Indications for the test: Screening of first degree relatives for risk of developing insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. May also be used to determine the risk of IDDM in gestational diabetes

Factors affecting the test: Detectable within first year after diagnosis in IDDM patients. Antibody levels decline as islet cells are destroyed by the autoimmune disease process
