Greater Manchester cervical cytology and HPV screening transfers to CMFT

Cervical cytology and HPV screening work for Greater Manchester is now being undertaken at Central Manchester University Hospitals, following the service transfer on April 1st.

The transfer means Laboratory Medicine at CMFT is now providing the cervical cytology and HPV laboratory screening service to all of Greater Manchester, Cumbria and Lancashire at our central site.

Over the past six months, following the tender award, detailed preparations have been taking place involving CMFT, NHS England and Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which previously carried out the screening work, to ensure the transfer is as smooth as possible.

The move of the service will also see a number of staff transferring from Pennine to join cytology staff at CMFT.

One innovation made possible by the transfer is the creation of a single Central Sample Takers Database for the whole of Greater Manchester, Cumbria and Lancashire. This database will be managed in the CMFT laboratory, with secure, multi-user access for sample takers available via the internet.
