Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) Screen (Bacteriology, Wythenshawe)
In response to the increasing numbers of CPE producing clinical
isolates of Enterobacteriaceaethe Infection Control Consultant and
Microbiology department have produced a protocol for CPE screening
The isolation of a clinical CPE isolate prompts the Infection
Control Team to screen all possible patient contacts to reduce the
transmission of resistance enzymes within the Trust.
Collection container (including preservatives):
Charcoal swab (please note these are not suitable for the MRI CPE
Specimen type: screening of faeces/rectal
Specimen transport: If processing is delayed,
refrigeration is preferable to storage at ambient temperature.
Delays of over 48hr are undesirable.
Special precautions: None
Measurement units: MIC mg/L
Turnaround time: Negative screen - 1 day,
positive results - 2-3 days
