Mortuary

The adult mortuary at Manchester Royal Infirmary is a modern purpose built facility which provides a vital part of the service given to patients who die in hospital, as well as in the community, and their bereaved family and friends. We provide a high quality mortuary service which respects the dignity of the deceased and their families as a key part of effective support for bereaved families.

Our mortuary provides an efficient and effective service which follows stringent procedures under our HTA licence. We ensure safety and security, whilst demonstrating respect and sensitivity for bereaved families. Our dedicated and caring team provide a service involving approximately 2500 deaths per year from the hospital and local community. We undertake approximately 1000 post mortem examinations, the majority under the direction of Her Majesty's Coroner for Manchester.

The mortuary is fully accredited to ISO 9001 standards, and we offer a full range of services to the trust as well as the community. This includes storage of deceased, post-mortem examinations, identifications and viewing facilities for bereaved relatives.

The mortuary is a major teaching centre for undergraduate medical and nursing students and postgraduate histopathology trainees.

The mortuary at CMFT facilitates the post mortems for Manchester City Council and we work in partnership with the following services;
