Are you ready for winter? It’s time to get Winter Wise

As the temperature begins to falls, it's time to wrap your home up nice and snug. Lagging your exposed pipes will prevent them from freezing and ( to add insult to injury) bursting too.

It's easy to protect your pipes, and making the effort will make sure you avoid a nasty case of the soggy-carpet-no-heating blues this winter.

Here are some top tip-twoos from Winston, United Utilities Winter Wise owl:Owl

1. Keep your pipes toasty - Wrap up your pipes and water tanks with lagging. Pay extra attention to the pipes in the garage, loft, or those running along the outside of the property because they are the ones most likely to freeze. Use waterproof lagging for outside pipes. Your local DIY store should have everything you need.

2. Find your stop tap - It controls the flow of water into your home. It's usually found under the kitchen sink or sometimes in a cellar or garage. Find out where it is so you can turn the water off quickly if your pipes freeze or burst.

3. Keep the heating on - Keeping your central heating on at a low temperature during a cold spell will stop your pipes from freezing. Make sure the heating comes on when you're away too. You don't want to come back to a flooded house!

4. Have the name of a plumber handy - It is a good idea to keep the name of a good plumber to hand in case you have a burst pipe. Type in your postcode at www.watersafe.org.uk to find your nearest qualified knight in shining overalls.

5. Check with your neighbours - If you find yourself without water when it's freezing cold outside, talk to your neighbours. If they still have water, it could be that your pipes have frozen. Turn off your water at the stop tap and then call your plumber or see our website for some top tips, and how-to videos at unitedutilities.com/winterwise
