Children’s Epilepsy Surgery Service Public Consultation

The Children's Epilepsy Surgery Service (CESS) is commissioned by NHS England to provide specialist pre-surgical evaluation and surgery to children in four specialist CESS centres across England.  Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (RMCH) and Alder Hey Children's Hospital has jointly been providing this specialist service since November 2012 (Bristol, Birmingham and Great Ormond Street are the other centres).

A service specification for CESS sets out the standards these children's epilepsy surgery centres have to meet in order to provide this service for children and young people.

NHS England is undertaking a public consultation on changes proposed in the Service Specification.  The proposal is:

  • Children to undergo their operation in one of the four CESS centres
  • CExpanding the list of operations performed at the CESS  centres
  • Non-CESS centres stop operating on older children

By visiting https://www.engage.england.nhs.uk/consultation/childrens-epilepsy-surgery you will find further information about the consultation process.  There is a short online survey where you can have your say on the proposed changes. The closing date is Thursday 18th June.
