Communications Team wins for Best Media Handling at AHCM Awards 2014

Our Communications Team picked up a prestigious Association for Healthcare Communications and Marketing award at a glamorous ceremony hosted by the Leeds Hilton last night.

The award - for Best Media Handling - related to the managing of press activity after a documentary featuring the University Dental Hospital of Manchester premiered on ITV1 to glowing reviews, sparking a nationwide debate about dental health.

The Dentists followed a number of patients being treated over several weeks - some undergoing cutting-edge dental and facial reconstructions.  It also highlighted the problem of patients needing numerous teeth extractions due to poor dental hygiene and/or poor diet.

Despite being aired during The World Cup, the show's viewing figures peaked at 4 million.

There was a flurry of media interest after heated discussion on social media during the documentary (#TheDentists trended in the UK throughout the initial transmission), and the issue of child dental health was even tabled for discussion at the House of Commons.Martin Ashley

Dental Consultants Claire Stevens and Martin Ashley were subsequently interviewed on the One Show sofa, BBC Breakfast and a whole range of national print media in the weeks that followed.

Many other members of the Dental Hospital team provided invaluable expertise in answering myriad questions from reporters and journalists, and were also praised for their compassion, skill and professionalism throughout the four-month filming period for the documentary.

The staff at the Dental Hospital were extremely proud of being part of the programme, and taking part had a positive impact on staff morale and team working within the hospital.

Fraser Woodward, chair of the AHCM, said: "These are the only awards that recognise and reward excellence in NHS communications, marketing and engagement. The calibre of the entries this year has been high."
