An Open Day is being organised to celebrate the bicentenary of
the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. This will take place on the
actual 200th anniversary of the hospital inauguration on
Trafalgar Day 1814: Tuesday 21st October 2014.
The hospital will host a special Open Day between 9am-4pm to
commemorate two hundred years of excellence in healthcare, opening
its doors to the public for a behind-the-scenes look at the
operational side of a hospital that treats a quarter of a million
patients a year.
Patients and members of the public are invited to join staff
past and present on this day to take a tour of the hospital.
Alongside the tour, there will be interactive stands in the
atrium where visitors will get a wealth of information, and may
even get the opportunity to have sight tests and their eyes
measured!
Other highlights will include:
- Information and displays on the clinical trials which have
happened or are currently happening at Manchester Royal Eye
Hospital.
- Demonstration of abnormal colour vision and electrophysiology,
including the chance to look at some virtual reality eyewear.
- A display of the history of the Eye Bank, including information
about donation and corneal grafts.
- Videos of procedures relating to ocular prosthetics
- Demonstration of eye conditions using simulation
spectacles
- Demonstration of diagnostic equipment and retinal camera to
photograph the eye
The tours will include a look round the operating theatres where
staff will be on hand to explain the instruments and equipment used
on a daily basis. They will also be able to demonstrate the
advances in surgery with displays of old equipment. Footage will
also be played of a 'real life' operation.
