Manchester Royal Eye Hospital set to expand specialist services across the region
Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH) is developing its world
class services across Greater Manchester, with the recent news that
it is now delivering vitreoretinal surgical services for patients
at Rochdale Infirmary.
Patients with eye conditions that come under the vitreoretinal
surgical specialism, such as retinal detachment, macular holes, and
severe diabetic eye disease, can now be treated by a MREH surgeon
in Rochdale if this is more local and convenient to them.
MREH already provides specialist, sophisticated vitreoretinal
services that caters for the whole of the North West, ensuring that
patients are getting the most advanced care from a wide area.
This expansion of services will now improve the patient
experience with reduced waiting times and ease of access for many
patients to a more local district hospital.
Vitreoretinal conditions are amongst the most urgent of eye
conditions, with quick treatment being paramount due to potential
for vision loss.
Susmito Biswas, Clinical Head of Division at MREH said:
"We are incredibly pleased to be collaborating with our
neighbouring Pennine Acute Trust to provide these important
services to more patients across the region.
"Patients can access their treatment more locally to them, and
continue to be cared for by the top clinicians from the Manchester
Royal Eye Hospital.
"More of this collaborative working will develop over 2015, with
our services being rolled out across the area, including the brand
new suite of ophthalmic services at the new Altrincham Hospital
later this year."
Mr Tanveer Hashmi, Ophthalmic Surgeon at The Pennine Acute
Hospitals NHS Trust said:
"This is a good example of NHS organisations working together
for the benefit of patients and providing a local service utilising
the mutli-disciplinary teams from CMFT and The Pennine Acute
Hospitals NHS Trust."
