Launch of new partnership for Manchester Orthopaedic Centre
Orthopaedic patients from Salford Royal will receive their
surgery at an off-site specialist centre, based at Trafford General
Hospital, as part of a new venture which is about to be
From this week, Salford Royal patients who require a planned
orthopaedic procedure, such as a hip replacement, will have their
operation at Manchester Orthopaedic Centre.
Manchester Orthopaedic Centre will be a joint partnership
between Salford Royal and our Trust. Our patients already
receive their planned orthopaedic surgery at the centre which
opened last year.
The vast majority of Salford Royal's scheduled orthopaedic
operations and day case procedures will be performed at Manchester
Orthopaedic Centre. As emergency orthopaedic surgery will
remain on the Salford Royal site, this will reduce the likelihood
of scheduled orthopaedic operations being cancelled.
Chair of Salford Royal's Division of Surgery and Consultant
Surgeon Mr Jonathan Vickers said: "We are delighted to offer our
planned orthopaedic surgery at Manchester Orthopaedic Centre.
Staffed by orthopaedic experts, including consultants, nurses and
other staff, the centre with its specialist theatres and bespoke
wards will offer high quality care for our patients.
"Although Trafford General is only a short distance from Salford
Royal, we understand that it represents quite a change for
patients. Patients will still be under the care of Salford Royal
consultants, remaining on the Salford Royal site for their
out-patient appointments before and after surgery. It is only
the in-patient stay that will take place on the ward at Manchester
"We are really excited to be part of the Manchester Orthopaedic
Centre and by the benefits this venture will bring for Salford
residents. By moving planned surgery to the specialist centre, we
are freeing up more capacity to make improvements in other
services, including stroke and our treatment of patients who come
to Salford in its role as a Major Trauma Centre."
Mr Mobeen Ismail, Clinical Head of Trafford Hospitals and
Clinical Director/Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Manchester
Orthopaedic Centre, said: "This new partnership is a major
step forward in our plans to develop Manchester Orthopaedic Centre
as a centre of excellence not only for patient care but also for
research, innovation, education and training.
"At Manchester Orthopaedic Centre, we are committed to
delivering high quality outcomes for our patients. We look
forward to providing this expanded service to our local
