New BRC Minor Procedures Suite now open for use

June 2010 saw the official opening of the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre's newly established Minor Procedures Suite, located within the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility and funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

The launch event was introduced by Professor Graeme Black, director of the Biomedical Research Centre, who welcomed the group of researchers, consultants, and members of the local bio-health community.  Professor Tony Heagerty, Medical Director of the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility, provided an overview of the work of the facility, and Gus McGrouther, Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Research at The University of Manchester, described his experience of the new Minor Procedures Suite.

Professor McGrouther, who has been using the Minor Procedures Suite for his work with Renovo Ltd and their anti-scarring agent Juvista, commented: "I have found the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility to be an ideal venue for undertaking minor surgical trials. We have undertaken a number of investigations for Renovo and have had excellent support from the nursing staff and the administration."

"Now that we have an operating theatre available, this will expand the range of procedures which we can undertake. This sterile environment will allow a whole range of investigative and diagnostic procedures to support clinical trials. This is a wonderful addition to our Manchester trials facilities."

The new suite is open to researchers and industry partners, and can be used for a whole host of research studies. All procedures are performed under sterile conditions with the aid of a dedicated Senior Surgical Research Nurse. A wide range of procedures can be carried out under local anaesthetic including:

  • Biopsies, with ultrasound if required
  • Minor plastic surgery techniques
  • Dermatological procedures
  • Ophthalmic procedures
  • Arthroscopic procedures

The Minor Procedures Suite provides a quiet and comfortable environment for participants and benefits from a team of staff on hand and a range of dedicated equipment. Visits to view the Minor Procedures Suite and discuss study requirements can be arranged through the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility study manager at rsm@wtcrf.nhs.uk or 0161 906 7517.
