Bulletin Banner Aug 16

Welcome to my August Bulletin, and I hope you've all had a good summer break.  As we move into September, the Governor election process is well underway.  There is a strong field of candidates and ballot papers were sent out on 25th August.  The closing date for voting is noon on 15th September and the election results will be announced at our Annual Members' Meeting (AMM) on 27th September.  Do please encourage staff and public members to vote (for those seats that are contested).  You can signpost members to the dedicated Governor Elections webpage to find out more.

Turning to the AMM, the planning is gathering pace.  The event is on Tuesday 27th September from 1.00pm to 4.00pm in the Postgraduate Centre on the Oxford Road site.  This year's theme is 'Working Together to Care for You' and our staff will be running information stands with our partners, showcasing how we all work together to care for our patients.  It's also a great chance to celebrate our rating of 'Good' by the Care Quality Commission with our members.

The formal part of the meeting will see the presentation of the Annual Report and Accounts to members by the Chief Executive and Executive Director of Finance, plus a report by Governors. I will chair the meeting, and invite questions from the audience to the Board of Directors.  More details will be on the FT Events page of our website in due course, and Donna will provide Governors with promotional materials to share with members and the public via your local networks.

The AMM is an excellent opportunity to meet and engage with members, and we are preparing a short member questionnaire to assist Governors in doing this.  Donna will be in touch with more details and to arrange engagement slots for Governors via our planned 'Meet Your Governors' area.  I do encourage as many of you as possible to attend, and of course to welcome our newly elected Governors.

You will all have received via email our latest bulletin regarding the Single Hospital Service proposals (July 2016) and there have already been several dedicated briefing sessions with Governors with the next in the series taking place on Tuesday, 6th September 2016. Donna will be in touch with more details in due course.

Governors received a presentation on the latest development around Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) services at the recent Governors Performance Review Meeting. This follows a recent announcement by NHS England that they are 'minded to' transfer CHD services from Manchester to Liverpool. The Trust is due to meet with NHS England during September to begin discussions on a service model and there will also be a meeting for patients at the start of October to keep them informed about what is happening.

One of the highlight events for me in recent weeks was attending the press conference to launch the £60m Citylabs expansion project.  We are working in a joint venture partnership with Manchester Science Partnerships (MSP), the UK's leading science and technology park operator, to develop the biomedical centre of excellence.  In a major vote of confidence for the Manchester city region, the development will create Citylabs 2.0 and Citylabs 3.0 on the CMFT campus, in the heart of Manchester's Innovation District - Corridor Manchester.

Working in partnership, the NHS can ensure health technologies are developed that deliver better outcomes more efficiently to meet the current and future needs of our patients and healthcare providers.  Governors can read more about this exciting development at http://www.cmft.nhs.uk/media-centre/latest-news/manchester-science-partnerships-invests-in-the-future-with-£60m-citylabs-expansion

Looking ahead, I am also pleased to tell you about a special event on Tuesday 20th September to celebrate our rating by the CQC as 'Good'.  It will be an opportunity to thank all of our staff, patients and stakeholders and to let everyone know what progress we have made since the rating was announced, through the 'Shine' programme.  There will be local celebrations showcasing our work in each of our hospitals, plus a special celebration on the Central and Trafford sites for all staff with local partners invited.  Governors will be sent more details/invitations in due course.

Finally, she may not have been in Rio, but we do have our own medal-winning Governor!  Congratulations to Geraldine Thompson, who has recently won one gold and two bronze medals for her work in this year's Institute of Medical Illustrators Awards for Clinical Photography.

Congratulations also go to clinician scientist Dr Rachel Lennon.  She has been awarded a prestigious Wellcome Senior Research Fellowship in Clinical Science worth more than £1.7 million, to help identify therapeutic targets to treat chronic kidney disease.

I look forward to catching up with Governors at the Board of Directors' Meeting on 12th September, and of course to seeing you at the AMM on the 27th September.  Do please contact me if you have any questions about the topics in this Bulletin or I can assist you in carrying out your role - 0161 276 6262 or steve.mycio@cmft.nhs.uk.

Best wishes,

Spinners Wanted!

Patient Grace is asking people to get in a spin this September!

Grace was blue-lighted to the children's hospital as she needed surgery after being diagnosed with a build-up of fluid of brain.  Now she is asking people to join in the charity's Silent Spin on Saturday 17 September in support of Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Saint Mary's Hospital.

We've teamed up with Pure Gym Altrincham for our annual three-hour spinathon with two sessions available to choose from.  Governors, their family and friends could put on their headphones and spin from 10.00am until 1.00pm or join us from 2.00pm until 5.00pm.

Entry costs £20 with a minimum sponsorship of £150.
