Chairman's Bulletin January 2014

Bulletin Banner Jan 14

Welcome to January's e-bulletin, and I would like to wish you all a very happy and successful New Year. My colleagues and I and look forward to working with you on the many programmes and work streams planned for 2014.

Congratulations go to two Trust colleagues who were awarded OBEs in the Queen's New Year's honours list.  Dr Catherine White has been Clinical Director at St Mary's Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) since 2003 and a Forensic Physician since 1995. Trust Non-Executive Director Kathy Cowell was recognised for services to the community in Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

Thank you to those Governors who attended the recent Governors' Annual Planning Workshop (21st January 2014) which provided a very real opportunity for Governors to put forward their comments and suggestions in relation to the Trust's Annual Plan 2014/15 proposals.  The suggestions/comments made by Governors have been documented with the finalised plan being available shortly.

You should have received an open invitation to attend the Governors' Membership Working Group (29th January 2014) at which Governors were invited to forward ideas/suggestions in order to generate new membership engagement initiatives.

At this meeting, Governors made the recommendation for all Public Governors to individually identify a local patient/public group that they can directly engage with (attend group/forum meetings).  A briefing pack is being developed in order to support Governors when engaging with Members face to face.

GOVERNOR ACTION: To identify a local patient/public group (contact to be made with a local GP Surgery, Library or Church Parish) - identified group details to be forwarded to Donna Beddows - FT Membership Manager

2014 is also a special year for the Eye Hospital, as it celebrates its bicentenary.  An international academic conference, atrium exhibition and open day are all being planned. You can find out more at the dedicated bicentenary webpages: www.mreh200.org.uk.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) will be carrying out a series of inspections of acute hospitals from January to March, to test its new approaches to inspecting NHS services. This letter from Professor Sir Mike Richards, the CQC's Chief Inspector of Hospitals, gives more details about the new regime and the dates of inspections. It also explains how the CQC hopes its relationship with Councils of Governors will develop as part of this new approach.

The 2013 Dr Foster Hospital Guide was published in December.  It measures hospital performance against mortality metrics, two of which you will be familiar with: Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratio (HSMR) and Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator (SHMI). Our Trust improved its performance in both areas to now show rates of 93 and 105 respectively.

I look forward to seeing you at the Governors' Performance Review Meeting on 12th February, but in the meantime if there is anything I can do to assist you in your role as a Governor, please contact me on 0161 276 8661 or at peter.mount@cmft.nhs.uk.
