I'd like to begin my first update of 2016 by wishing Governors a very happy new year. 2016 is certain to be another challenging year, but I'm also very positive about the significant changes that are being planned across the Greater Manchester health economy, which will deliver major benefits for our patients, staff and members.

Governors have a key role to play in shaping the future of healthcare across our city, and of course within our own Trust.  I would encourage as many Governors as possible to attend today's Forward Planning Workshop.  At this meeting we will agree Annual Plan priorities, followed by a discussion of Greater Manchester Devolution and Manchester Locality Plans.

Canvassing the views and opinions of members and the wider public as part of our forward planning process is a statutory requirement of Governors.  I would like to thank our Membership Office team for all their hard work on our recent member and public engagement campaign in supporting Governors to facilitate this.  The new Forward Planning Survey was promoted via newsletters, emails, social media, staffnet, WWN and the CMFT website.  It generated over 330 responses from our public and staff members and the wider public, outlining their views on our priorities and their suggestions for ways to improve our services and maintain the highest standards of care.

I'm also grateful to David Edwards, Sharon Green and Geraldine Thompson who held a staff engagement session on 19th January in the Conservatory at Manchester Royal Infirmary to gain further feedback on our priorities. Further sessions are planned in other food outlets across the site over the next few months.

Governors are also actively participating in the recruitment of two new Non-Executive Directors. Interviews will be held in February with the recommendations being presented to the Council of Governors meeting on 2nd March for approval.

Turning to Trust performance, pressures on the urgent care system have continued into quarter 4, although it's worth recognising that CMFT's performance level is amongst the highest in Greater Manchester. This is a credit to the teams who have successfully introduced different ways of working over the last 12 months, and to the careful planning which has ensured additional resources are available during the winter.

We are supporting the delivery of planned care, and responding to increased urgent care demand, by opening an extra 18 beds within Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) during January. This follows extensive environmental work in Ward 3 and 4 to help manage Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE), and considerable efforts to recruit more nurses.

On 12th January the junior doctors strike took place, which did involve the cancellation of elective procedures and patient appointments. I'd like to thank everyone who helped to ensure all the patients affected knew what was happening.

In the next few weeks we anticipate that the Care Quality Commission (CQC) will be giving its overall view on our performance, following its recent inspection. The CQC inspectors have already provided some feedback on areas for action, and work is underway to address these, including:

  • Improvements to the environment, including better cleaning schedules and work at community premises such as Longsight Health Centre.
  • A review of the arrangements made for transition of care from children's to adult's services across all specialties to ensure consistent high quality.
  • A review of the delivery of end of life care across all services following the changes made to pathways in recent years.
  • Monitoring and review of medication storage including fridges and community premises.
  • A review of the behaviours associated with safety checklists for interventional procedures to prevent never events.

The inspection team also noted some very positive findings, including warm welcoming staff, good patient feedback and Early Warning Scores.

The final CQC report will be presented at a meeting in February/March, attended by the CQC, the Trust, Monitor, our Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), NHS England, Healthwatch, the Local Authority, Health Education England and any other key stakeholders. The Trust will present its response and we then have four weeks to prepare and submit an action plan.

Finally, I'd like to update you on an exciting development which reflects the important role that our Trust, alongside Manchester Science Partnerships and the Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership, is playing in providing cutting-edge patient care and innovative research and treatments.  The new Enterprise Zone for Life Sciences, which includes our Clusterlabs development on the site of the old Saint Mary's Hospital, will deliver new jobs alongside improvements to health and wellbeing for people across the city region.  The Enterprise Zone will attract innovative life sciences companies to our campus, enabling us to work with them to develop new solutions for diagnostics, treatments and care.

Manchester plays a key role in pioneering ovarian cancer screening study

New results from the world's biggest ovarian cancer screening trial, involving Saint Mary's Hospital as one of 13 centres across the UK, suggest that screening based on an annual blood test may help reduce the number of women dying from the disease by around 20%.

Farewell to Carole Shackleton

Staff member Carole Shackleton has retired this month, after a 39-year nursing career in the MRI's Emergency Department (ED).  Carole has been a much loved, well respected member of the ED throughout her career, since joining in 1977. Reliable and hardworking, Carole's colleagues say: "An inspiration to many, Carole always cared deeply about her staff and their wellbeing. She has been upbeat, positive and a role model to all and will be greatly missed from the ED team. We would like to wish Carole all the best for the future."

ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon + PHOTO

Thinking of getting fit in the New Year? Our Charity still has places available for the 2016 Greater Manchester Marathon and needs keen runners to sign up and represent our family of hospitals.

On Sunday 10th April thousands of runners will complete the course, which will take in some key landmarks and beautiful countryside around the borough of Trafford. The course is one of the flattest in the world, so is great for anyone looking to do their first marathon, or for those looking to set a new personal best time.

There are three distance options available in the marathon:

  • a single entry full marathon distance
  • a half and half relay team option for two participants
  • a four leg relay team option.

The Charity Team has a limited number of FREE places available that Governors can apply for by emailing charity.events@cmft.nhs.uk or calling 0161 276 4522.  With our free places we are asking for a minimum sponsorship pledge of £300 per marathon distance, i.e. a single marathon runner should raise at least £300, as should the four leg relay team as a whole.

Governors are reminded that The Boulevard is closed from Monday 11th January for 8 weeks in order to repair a large collapsed drain under the road. Pedestrian access to the hospitals from the Grafton Street car park will remain open. Access from Hathersage Road remains unaffected for visitors being dropped off and for access to disabled parking outside the hospital entrances.
