Chairman's Bulletin September 2014

Bulletin Banner Sept 14

I'd like to open my monthly newsletter for Governors with a very warm welcome to our new elected and nominated Governors, who formally took up their roles at our Annual Members' Meeting (AMM) on 23rd September 2014.  Congratulations to you all, and I'm sure you will make a very significant contribution to the continued development of CMFT and represent your constituents very effectively. I would also like to take this opportunity to personally thank all the Governors who have left us this Autumn. Your support, energy and commitment over the years has been invaluable and I wish you all the very best in the future.

The AMM was a very successful event, as those Governors who attended and engaged with members will testify.  I have thanked the Board of Directors, all the standholders and the organising team for their efforts.  Feedback from the 200 plus people who attended was very positive and complimentary.  And of course, I'm very grateful to Governors who spoke during the Q&A session and helped to support our Membership stand afterwards. You can see the photos of the event here

Another special event this month was the official opening of the new Citylabs biomedical centre of excellence by Chancellor George Osborne.  CMFT is a partner in the £25 million redevelopment of the former Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.

Research is at the heart of our vision, and Citylabs provides a great opportunity to work with research and innovation companies to develop medical technology and products which can be made rapidly available to our patients.

Looking ahead, we have further reason to celebrate, as 21st October 2014 is the 200th birthday of the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH). Governors are in the process of being invited to come along to an Open Day at MREH on the 21st. You will be able to visit a wide range of interactive stands, covering clinical trials, a demonstration of visual illusions and virtual reality eyewear, a history of the Eye Bank, and, demonstrations of eye conditions using simulation spectacles. You can also take a tour of the operating theatres, where staff will explain how certain surgical instruments are used on a daily basis and how they have progressed through the history of the hospital. For more information please visit www.mreh200.org.uk

Turning to national issues, both the major political parties have announced health policies which seem to be guaranteeing that there will not be cuts in NHS funding. This is currently receiving extensive coverage both in the Press and Media.

Several of the current challenges facing the NHS will be discussed at the Council of Governors meeting on 15th October 2014, and I look forward to seeing you all then.  Do please get in touch if I can assist you in your role as Governor at any time, on 0161 276 8661 or at peter.mount@cmft.nhs.uk.
