Professor Nicholas Jones underwent his undergraduate training at the Universities of St. Andrews and Manchester, and postgraduate training in ophthalmology at Southampton and Manchester, UK. In 1991 he created the Manchester Uveitis Clinic, which has so far treated over 4,000 patients with uveitis. The clinic is one of the busiest for uveitis in the world, and has an international reputation for high quality of care. Professor Jones is the author of two textbooks: "Uveitis: An Illustrated Manual" which won the Royal Society of Medicine Book Prize in 1999, and "Uveitis: Second Edition" in 2012, and has also written a bicentenary history of the hospital ("Manchester Royal Eye Hospital 1814-2014: an Inside View" 2014), several book chapters and many research papers on the subject of unveitis and intraocular inflammation. He is regularly invited to lecutre and teach internationally, and his clinic attracts applicants worldwide for training fellowships. The Manchester Uveitis Clinic has a high research output; the main current interests are on the diagnosis and management of sarcoidosis and tuberculosis, on new imaging in uveitis, and on secondary glaucoma. Professor Jones is an elected member of the International Uveitis Study Group, a founder faculty member of the Moorfields Uveitis Course, and a member of the International Ocular Inflammation Society.
