The Optometry Department undertakes a range of services for patients including:

  • Refraction (sight testing)
  • Prescription and provision of medical and therapeutic contact lenses (i.e where contact lenses are medically required)
  • Low vision rehabilitation
  • Glaucoma assessment clinic
  • Optometric assessment clinic
  • Cataract co-management
  • Macular referral (looking at problems surrounding the central part of the retina at the back of the eye)
  • Day phasing (measuring the intraocular pressure in the eye throughout the day)
  • Complex biometry (i.e the measurement of the length of the eye, a procedure usually required before cataract surgery)
  • Diagnostic ultrasound (to provide detailed imaging of the eye structure)
  • Ophthalmic services - providing a full range of services for both children and adults with learning disabilities. For example, this includes eye examinations at special schools undertaken in conjunction with community orthoptic services.
