Surgical Retinal

Service Description

The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital provides secondary and tertiary care to residents of Greater Manchester and beyond with retinal disorders (problems at the back of the eye including the vitreous and retina).Surgical Retina services, otherwies known as vitreoretinal surgery are the treatments within Retinal Services where an operation is required for example, retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membranes, severe diabetic eye disease.

Manchester Royal Eye Hospital has a large body of consultants with expertise in these areas, who are supported by a large multidisciplinary team of specialist nurses, optometrists and ophthalmic photographers to provide a high-throughput, comprehensive and patient-centred service.

The Vitreoretinal Unit at MREH has a national and international standing as a centre of excellence providing surgical treatments for complex retinal problems including:

Complicated Diabetic Eye Disease

Complications after cataract surgery

Eye injuries


Patients with urgent eye problems (ie: Retinal Detachment) can be referred to the Unit for emergency surgery. The Vitreoretinal Unit has a renowned Fellowship training programme: many Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeons in the UK and overseas (Spain, Italy, Greece, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia) have been trained in Manchester.
