Referral is made via your GP or through your community optometrist and their cataract referral refinement scheme. When we receive your referral, you will be sent a letter inviting you to attend a consultation in 2-3 weeks with one of our specialist ophthalmic clinicians.

  • Your visual acuity (eye sight) will be tested by one of our healthcare support workers or nurses
  • A specialist ophthalmic doctor will examine your eyes and discuss with you the effects of your vision on your everyday activities. The doctor will provide you with all the information you need in order to make an informed decision as to whether or not cataract surgery is the right thing for you. During this consultation you will have the chance to ask any questions you have or raise any concerns.
  • If you require cataract surgery, one of our nurses will complete a biometry to measure the dimensions of your eye to determine what size of lens you will require
  • Before leaving the consultation you will be given a date for surgery in 1-2 weeks time if convenient

Please note that the entire consultation can take up to 2-3 hours as it may be required to put drops into your eyes and wait for your pupils to dilate as part of the examination. We do not recommend driving for 1-2 hours after the consultation so you may wish to bring someone with you to the consultation

When you arrive for your surgery you will be admitted and provided with a locker in order to keep your valuables safe during your surgery. You will be taken into day case where firstly the doctor will assess you to make sure you are fit to proceed with surgery. If there are no unexpected health issues, a named nurse will take your history, check your observations and put some eye drops into your eyes. You will then be taken into the anaesthetic room where you will be given more eye drops and prepared for surgery.

Surgery can take between 15 and 45 minutes depending on the severity of your cataract. A named nurse will stay with you throughout the entire procedure to ensure you are relaxed and comfortable at all times. Once surgery is complete you will be taken back into the day case area and provided with a hot drink and biscuits. You will need to stay in the day case area for 20-30 minutes following surgery. Before leaving you will be given a letter with details of your post-operative assessment date (4-6 weeks after surgery).

Please note, Withington Cataract Centre operates a pooled service and therefore the clinician you see in your initial consultation may not be the same as the surgeon who carries out your cataract surgery.
