Acute Medicine

The aim of Acute Medicine is to deliver a high quality, evidenced base, patient centered care for patients presenting with acute medical conditions whilst ensuring that all individuals are treated with dignity and respect within the clinical setting.

The departments in Acute Medicine improves the efficiency in the admission process for unplanned patients by providing assessment, care and treatment for a designated period (usually 48 hours) prior to transfer to a medical ward or home where appropriate.

The Acute Medical Team provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary patient-centered care whilst closely working with other specialist teams based in both hospital and community settings.

The Acute Medicine Unit (AMU)
at Manchester Royal Infirmary
is a 55 bedded unit which includes 
7 side rooms. The AMU primary
role is to provide a rapid definitive
assessment, investigations and
treatments for patients admitted
as an emergency by their GP
or who require admission from the
emergency department.

The Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU)
provides assessment, diagnosis
and treatment with the aim of
getting patients home safely on the
same day, without the need for an
overnight stay or admission to
hospital. The Unit is staffed by our
team of Acute Physicians, with input
being given by specialist teams.

Visiting Times:

AMU is open to visitors between 09:00 am - 11:00 am, 14:00 pm - 17:00 pm and 18:30 pm - 20:00 pm each day. The ward operates a protected meal time between the hours of 12.00 pm - 1.00 pm and 17:00 pm - 18:00 pm. Only two visitors are permitted at the bedside at any one time.
