Qualified in Medicine in 1988 from the University of Manchester. Trained in the North West and London in Geriatric and General Medicine. MA in Medical Ethics and Law, King’s College, University of London in 1998. Returned to Manchester in 1999 and took up post as a Consultant Geriatrician specialising in community geriatrics and long term complex conditions in South Manchester. Led the development of the Directorate of complex and integrated care for adults in South Manchester and was Associate Medical Director for NHS Manchester provider services in 2010-11. More recently was Clinical Champion for frail older people and integrated care for Greater Manchester. Currently British Geriatrics Society Champion for End of Life Care and a standing member of the NICE Indicators Committee.
In 2015 joined CMFT as a Consultant Geriatrician and Clinical Director of Adult Specialist and Community Services. Also Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Manchester University and teaches medical ethics and law at Salford University. Published on topics ranging from mental capacity, end of life care, dementia and adult safeguarding. Current academic interests include frailty, end of life and care home medicine.
