Dr Charles Hay

Consultant Haematologist, Honorary Senior Lecturer in Medicine

After Training in Sheffield and London, Dr Hay spent 7 years as a senior Lecturer in Haematology at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, specilising in Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Dr Hay has been Director of the Manchester Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre since 1994. During that time, he has developed and expanded this Regional Tertiary referral service and helped to develop a very successful comprehensive Haematology Obstetrics Service, in partnership with Consultants in Fetomaternal Medicine at St Mary's Hospital. Dr Hay is active in research into the management and complications of treatment of bleeding disorders. He is principle investigator of the International Randomised Immune Tolerance Study, currently running in 28 countries worldwide. He is Co-Chair of the Factor VIII and IX Standardisation Subcommittee of the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. He is on the editorial board or a reviewer for a number of journals. He has published over 80 papers, reviews and chapters. He has run the National Haemophilia Database since 2002, developed a large and thriving software consultancy in partnership with Dr R Hollingsworth and working within the NHS and Abroad. He has been Chair of UKHCDO since 2005. He is a regular advisor to the Department of Health.
