All aspects of adult cardiac surgery but with a special interest in complex revision surgery. Valve surgery including all heart valves but in particular mitral valve repair procedures and surgery to the ascending aorta. Coronary artery bypass including complete arterial revascularisation and the application of minimally invasive techniques.
Graduated from the Queens University of Belfast and trained
there at the Royal Victoria Hospital and in various centres in the
United Kingdom and North America. Surgically he has a very busy
adult practice which encompasses all cardiac surgery.
He lectures on arterial grafting and minimally invasive surgery.
He helped found the Manchester Heart Centre at the Manchester Royal
Infirmary and served as clinical director from 1998 until 2002. He
is a co-principal investigator within the cardiovascular research
group in the University of Manchester. He has several additional
roles both in the Trust and Nationally. In the Trust he is
Associate Medical Director, dealing with appraisal and
Nationally he chairs the Clinical Reference Group, advising NHS
England on setting standards for adult cardiac surgery. He chairs
for NICE, the Clinical Commissioning Group Outcome Indicator Set
Committee, which is translating the NICE Quality Standards into
outcomes for the Commissioners to assess the quality of the
services they are commissioning. He has been appointed as part-time
medical director of the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership
(HQIP) leading on the development of clinical audit and in
particular, the use of audit to improve our services.
