Information for Healthcare Professionals

Information for referrers

We offer a wide range of diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures, which are listed below. For general guidance regarding referrals for Nuclear Medicine tests, we recommend the RCR guidelines. If you remain unsure of the appropriate test for your patient, please call us to discuss this on 0161 276 4820 (ask for the duty doctor).

When making a referral, please provide detailed information about the patient and their condition. We are legally bound to confirm the test is suitable before proceeding to administer radioactive materials to patients, and considerable information is often needed to make this judgement. You may receive an additional form to complete or a phone call from our staff to collect this information before we can make an appointment.

We contribute to the regional network of scanners providing FDG PET-CT for oncology. Bookings for these scans are co-ordinated by our colleagues in Radiology at The Christie. FDG PET-CT for oncology scans should be requested via this link from their page. If you would particularly like your patient to have their PET scan in our department, you can specify this on the online request form.

Please note that we cannot perform scans in patients with a latex allergy.

Note also that it is often preferable not to perform Nuclear Medicine procedures when the patient is pregnant and/or breastfeeding, as most of our procedures involve intravenous administration of radioactive materials. However, some tests are justified in pregnancy and breastfeeding if they are associated with low risk and have considerable impact on patient management, such as the VQ lung scan. If your patient is pregnant or breastfeeding, please ensure this information is clearly documented on the request and call us 0161 276 4820 to discuss beforehand if possible.
