Orthotics

Service Descrption:

The Orthotic service provides assessment, prescription and fitting of orthotic devices. The term 'orthoses' refers to a wide range of devices such as orthopaedic footwear, insoles, callipers, splints, fabric supports and collars, which are applied externally to a part of the body to achieve one or more of the following:

  • correction or prevention of a physical deformity
  • stabilisation of a joint or joints
  • reduction of pain
  • improvement in mobility or function
  • reduction in the risk of injury

Our Orthotist has an extensive knowledge of all types of orthoses and will assess, prescribe and fit off the shelf or made to measure orthoses and offer a continuing programme of maintenance, repair and reassessment of need, once the orthosis has been supplied.

An outpatient podiatry session is currently incorporated into the orthotic service.  Our Podiatrist will assess, prescribe and fit made to measure and off the shelf foot orthotics and also footwear adaptations, which allow the muscles, tendon and bones of the feet and lower leg to function at their best.  An important area of Podiatry is the study of biomechanics or gait analysis - how the human body moves.  Biomechanical problems affecting the feet can increase stresses within the foot structures and surrounding soft tissues, creating localised pain in the foot and ankle, but also problems in the lower limbs, knees, hips and back.  Correction of poor foot biomechanics with orthotics (insoles) can improve and prevent many types of symptoms.
