The ASU is unlicensed and operates under a Part 10 Exemption from the licensing requirements of The Medicines Regulations 2012.

Pharmacy Aseptic Services provides an aseptic dispensing service for in- and out-patients of the Trust. All products are prepared, released and issued for administration to named patients against a signed prescription. The service has three components:

  • Cytotoxic Service
  • Parenteral Nutrition Service
  • Intravenous Additive Service for a limited number of products, mainly for NICU

Clinical trial drugs (Investigational Medicinal Products) may be handled in all three parts of the service.

The service is audited externally on an annual basis by Quality Control North West (QCNW) auditors to ensure compliance with current updates of the national standards and guidance. The service is also audited internally on an annual basis to ensure compliance with NHS guidance specified in Quality Assurance of Aseptic Preparation Services, 4th edition, 2005.

All ASU staff are trained and assessed prior to undertaking any duties unsupervised. They are re-assessed regularly to ensure ongoing competence and compliance with standard operating procedures.

There is a comprehensive environmental monitoring scheme for the facilities and equipment. Corrective action is taken following receipt of data exceeding operational limits. Comprehensive standard operating procedures are available covering all aspects of the service.
