After qualifying in medicine at Bristol University I specialised in paediatrics and neonatology, gaining experience at Bristol Children's Hospital and Great Ormond Street amongst other places.  In 1987 I was appointed as the Neonatal Lecturer, University of London, based at Saint Thomas' Hospital, where I completed my MD in neonatal haematology. Since 1993 I have been a Consultant Neonatologist at Saint Mary's Hospital, where I was Clinical Director between 1996 and 2011.

I am currently the Head of the North Western Deanery School of Paediatrics and Chair of the Greater Manchester Neonatal Intensive Care Partnership Clinical Advisory Group.

I am the national neonatal representative on the NICE Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee and Medical Editor for Infant and the Editorial Board of Early Human Development.
