Dr Howell graduated from the University of Queensland, Australia, moving to the UK in 1988. She completed her specialty training at Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital and Hillingdon Hospital.

She moved to Manchester in 1996 as Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Trafford General Hospital, where she supported promoting normality in obstetrics together with her midwifery colleagues, and also developed the Out-patient Hysteroscopy service, along with general obstetrics and gynaecology services.

She led the postgraduate medical education programme at the Trust as Postgraduate Clinical Tutor from 2001 to 2010.

With the reconfiguration of maternity services in February 2010, she moved to a joint post, providing obstetric care at Saint Mary's Hospital, linking the antenatal services provided at Trafford General Hospital for Saint Mary's patients, plus providing general Gynaecology services at Trafford.

She holds the post of Specialty Tutor, overseeing postgraduate training at Saint Mary's and Trafford General Hospitals including specialty, GP and Foundation trainees.
