Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist



Special Interests:

General Obstetrics and Diabetic Antenatal care; Benign Gynaecology including Colposcopy and Outpatient Hysteroscopy; Medical Education.


Dr Howell graduated from the University of Queensland, Australia, moving to the UK in 1988.  She completed her specialty training at Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital and Hillingdon Hospital.  Her MD research topic was medical management of endometriosis.

She moved to Manchester in 1996 as Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Trafford General Hospital, where she supported promoting normality in obstetrics together with her midwifery colleagues, and also developed the Out-patient Hysteroscopy service, along with general obstetrics and gynaecology services including Colposcopy.

With the reconfiguration of maternity services in February 2010, she moved to a joint post, providing obstetric care at Saint Mary's Hospital, linking the antenatal services provided at Trafford General Hospital for Saint Mary's patients, plus providing general Gynaecology services at Trafford and Saint Mary's.

She has been closely involved with both undergraduate and postgraduate training thoughout her career, including leading the postgraduate medical education programme at Trafford as Postgraduate Clinical Tutor from 2001 to 2010.

Currently she is the Divisional Lead for Medical Education for Saint Mary's and also a member of the education team at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, overseeing the Continuing Professional Development programme for specialists.
